Especially thinking about our themed online lifedrawingsessions, where first of all you and I are having the special occasion to study, explore, admire and be inspired by other artists and works of art!
And as you know, our adventure is not casual: we are following our strong artistic fil rouge that, since 2020, is creating our artistic story, never proposing the same artist and everytime giving to us the privilege to discover or know better another one.
So after the Italian illustrator and cartoonist Gabriele Pennacchioli we are ready to live another fantastic online themed lifedrawingsession, our 73rd online lifedrawingsession with me as model and host, inspired by ...drum roll please....

As told many times, it was since October 2024, finding the last copy of Investigation 4 by him in a library in Paris, that I had the true desire to run a themed session dedicated to his enigmatic and very attractive art.
I knew him before October 2024 thanks to the internet and some random images but I was not an expert of all his production. So I started to study his works of art, his different styles,his inspirations, by myself having a look at other of his volumes (in Italy for example he is quite unknown ) and I really fell in love with him...
Why? There's something ...maybe the palette which reminds me to Anders Zorn ( forgive me if I'm telling some incorrect suggestions, but they are my suggestions) and also I see in these paintings/illustrations/drawings, a perfect reflection into the Secession movement until the Expressionism.
His color palette tends toward dark, saturated tones, which add depth and dramatic intensity to his works.
Wood's work is characterized by a bold combination of painting and graphics, using various media ranging from ink and acrylic to advanced digital techniques...
Well, about Ashley Wood except for his biography ( he was born in 1971), there is not a real critic about his wonderful art. His production is wide and transversal... and that's why our strong fil rouge decided to propose him after Pennacchioli.
As well as Pennacchioli, Ashley Wood works a lot using digital art, but he also creates true masterpieces like oil paintings producing works that stand out for their expressiveness and captivating atmosphere. His creations, often tinged with science fiction and pop culture, have captured the imagination of many art lovers around the world.
Known for his work on Metal Gear Solid and Popbot, Wood's art often explores dystopian themes with futuristic and realistic imagery. His style blends narrative art with cutting-edge aesthetics, influenced by various comic book artists. His most notable collaborations include projects with Hideo Kojima and prominent comic book publishers such as Marvel and DC. His work has won numerous awards and is an important influence in the worlds of comics, video games, and pop culture.
And, of course, His stylistic cider challenges conventional boundaries, giving life to raw and dystopian visions with extreme elegance.
His works pulsate with an underground current of pure energy, encapsulating a tumultuous mix of despair and beauty.
I would also add boldness. Especially in the female figures who are the absolute protagonists.
Always erotic, sensual but for themselves, self-sufficient, like queens and mistresses of another world.
Winners, triumphant heroines who almost enjoy how they know how to subdue the losers.
But I repeat, Ashley Wood's nudes are the works that strike me the most and on which I want to focus your attention.
In fact, he has published numerous single volumes dedicated solely to nudes, a sign that this is a subject of extreme interest to him and to his (or our who knows?) post apocalyptic erotic world.
The gloomy post-nuclear world portrayed in his graphic novels and paintings is inhabited by heavily-armed robots, rabid zombies, dead cosmonauts, long-limbed amazon girls, sexbots, new age ninjas, violent and other predatory creatures. Wood’s painting style is very loose and expressive with a rich lush patina.
In his erotic work the intimate protagonists are placed at desolate impersonal locations such as poorly lit factory halls. The alienating atmosphere is enhanced by the invisible or partially visible in the pin up female face. The male faces are completely absent since they wear either an astronaut helmet, an oxygen or a gas mask. In the intercourse scenes the faces are never visible. The young scantily-clad girls (Amazones) often only wear light stockings and lean or sit on helmets or so-called Popbots while the man often only plays a supporting role.
Wood’s painting style is very loose and expressive with a rich lush patina. In his erotic work the intimate protagonists are placed at desolate impersonal locations such as poorly lit factory halls.
